This booklet provides information on the rights of parents of handicapped children (according to both Illinois and national laws) and describes services required by law for the handicapped child and the necessary steps to obtain these services. Definitions of various mental, physical, and emotional handicaps are given according to legal guidelines. The legal rights and services covered in the booklet are: (1) free public school education, (2) tuition reimbursement for attendance at private schools, (3) individual care grants to those parents whose child is on a waiting list for a state institution, (4) vocational rehabilitation and training services, (5) public aid for individuals over 21, (6) social security benefits, and (7) income tax exemptions for expenses incurred.
