The Status of Cable Communications in Libraries.

Librarians are and will be using cable television technologies to enhance and extend their services. While questions remain in regard to the technology itself, the health and viability of the industry, and government policy, librarians are seeing cable communications as an opportunity to gain credibility and visibility, and also as an extension of the legitimate function of libraries to collect, store, and disseminate information. While the public library remains in the forefront at the moment, university libraries are beginning to use campus-wide cable systems, which are often interfaced with the commercial cable system in town. School media centers are also participating in cable activities, and special libraries are becoming repositories for video materials used by their companies for training and sales purposes. At present the public libraries, which stand to gain the most from cable communications, have the opportunity to participate, together with other groups, in educational and planning activities to insure a people-oriented cable system and to program to fulfill various information needs of the library's clientele. In the future, cable appears to offer an opportunity for electronic resource sharing at relatively low cost. (Author/LS)
