The aims of the first phase of the Statistics Indexing and Retrieval (STIR) Project have been: (1) to define the types and sources of statistics which should be within the scope of an operational indexing system for statistical sources; (2) to analyze the use made of statistical sources; and (3) to consider the intellectual, structural, and economic factors with a bearing on the design of a system. The STIR system will provide indexing of all primary sources of statistical data in the United Kingdom. Further study of the possibility of computerized indexing is planned. The appendixes include forms and results of a survey of subject enquiries for United Kingdom statistics and a questionnaire used for a survey of statistics users. (Author/LS)
