Design and Documentation of Improved Instructional Programs for Disadvantaged Handicapped Children. Final Report.
Dirr, Peter J.; Anderson, Sarah M.
Presented is the final report of a project to design and implement improved instructional programs for disadvantaged handicapped (retarded or learning disabled) children at the elementary grade level. Activities are described which were conducted to accomplish the following objectives: to initiate, evaluate, and document a crisis-intervention program; to design and validate a learning style inventory to diagnose and prescribe instruction at the primary level; and to investigate the applications of the computer for diagnosing needs and prescribing instructional programs in mathematics and language arts. Reported are activities which included interviewing the 11 teachers involved with the Crisis Intervention Program (all reacted positively), validating the two developed instruments with 17 special education teachers (all reacted positively), and developing and using three computer programs (on consonants, consonant blends, and syllabication) with up to 38 third grade pupils. Appended are the report of the crisis intervention teacher, classification by handicapping conditions of the 30 students participating in the testing situation, sample profiles on the learning abilities inventory, and examples of pupil-computer interactions.
