The study was designed to assess the factors influencing the career motivation of Navy physicians and dentists and to evaluate differential career incentives. A structured multiple-choice mail questionnaire was administered in March 1973. Twenty-six job factors were found to be related to job satisfaction among physicians and dentists. The respondents expressed satisfaction with such factors as: amount of personal responsibility, relationships with colleagues, security of employment, and amount of free time. They were dissatisfied with such factors as; remuneration, quality of facilities and equipment, and the amount of participation they had in making decisions affecting their careers. Both physicians and dentists expected job satisfaction to be potentially higher in civilian life than in the Navy. Twenty-five recommendations were made to improve job satisfaction and retention among physicians and dentists in the Navy. (NTIS)
