Value Clarification: Clarifying Relationships Between Science and Society Using the Concept of the Value Sheet.
Casteel, J. Doyle; And Others
This paper addresses itself to four major areas relevant to the study and understanding of the relationships between man, as a person and as a social being, and the scientist, his society and his science. The essay presents four phases of a value clarification strategy and definitions of student verbal statements associated with these phases. Four teacher interrogative behaviors relevant to the design of and implementation of the "value sheet" are identified. Six formats of the value sheet are presented with examples of each format provided. The instructions on how the classroom teacher can construct his own value sheets are presented. As used in this essay, the value sheet is defined as a planned learning activity designed to encourage students to express, examine, and organize their values and feelings; and as a planned activity that can be employed as part of on-going inquiries in the science classroom. Value clarification refers to language patterns employed by students, used as a basis for inferring that they are comprehending, conceptualizing, and valuing knowledge about man and society.
