Encouragement: A Language Concept Related to Effective Teaching. Student Guide.
Utah State Univ., Logan. Utah Protocol Materials Project.
This student guide is part of protocol learning module on the use of verbal encouragement as an effective teaching technique for increasing student achievement. The module was developed as part of the Utah State University Protocol Materials Project and consists of this guide, a protocol film, and testing materials. The student guide contains (a) an introduction to protocols and instruction in their use; (b) a discussion of the concept of encouragement; (c) lessons in the recognition and application of encouragement in classroom situations; and (d) suggestions for incorporating encouragement into the student's teaching repertoire. The principle underlying the module is that teacher language designed to reward desirable student responses tends to increase student achievement and bring about better classroom interaction. Three types of teacher encouragement are noted in the module: (a) general praise - teacher uses a praise statement such as "good" or "fine"; (b) specific praise - the teacher uses praise statements which identify specifically the elements of the student's performance which are being praised; and (c) use of student ideas - the teacher acknowledges student ideas by referring to them and utilizing them in classroom discussion.
