Extension: A Language Concept Related to Effective Teaching. Student Guide.
Utah State Univ., Logan. Utah Protocol Materials Project.
This student guide was developed as part of the Utah State University Protocol Materials Project. The guide includes an introduction to protocol materials and an explanation of the concept of extension, that is, improving the quality of student response and increasing the number of students participating in a discussion. Four techniques for extending student response are described: (a) prompting; (b) seeking further clarification; (c) refocusing; and (d) redirection. Following the description of the concept, the guide requires the student to complete two recognition practice lessons, view the protocol film on extension, and complete two application practice lessons. The guide includes suggestions to the student for incorporating extension in his teaching behavior. (HMD)
