An overview of the new Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) program in special education is presented in this newsletter. The development of this program is traced back to that of the first of the BSCS programs for educable mentally handicapped (EMH) children 11-13 years old. Among the general objectives listed, it is shown that there is deep concern to develop interests, skills, and positive attitudes through experiences with scientific--especially biological--concepts. The course aims to provide the student with challenging intellectual activity at a level commensurate with his ability to respond effectively. It is hoped that the child will develop a knowledge of himself in relation to his environment, along with a tendency to apply this knowledge to the tasks of everyday living. Sample activities from one of the units are presented. The framework of the development of "Me and My Environment" was derived from a number of components. These include several basic assumptions which are identified, as well as the areas of need and ways to meet those needs through the content of the curriculum. Other components include the environmental themes and developmental tasks related to the major ideas and concepts presented in the curriculum. (EB)
