College Transfer. Working Papers and Recommendations from the Airlie House Conference 2-4, December 1973.
Six conference working papers concerning the transfer student are presented. They cover: issues in solving the transfer problems; transfer standards and the public interest; substantive issues in the transfer problem; the transfer student dimension of articulation; organizing approaches to facilitate student mobility in postsecondary education; and the high cost of transferring. Major conclusions suggest that changes in policy and practice most beneficial to transfer students will result from: (1) establishing the transfer student on an equitable basis with the native student; (2) providing the student exact and full information necessary to his academic progress, and providing the conseling that must accompany it, both on an institutional and an areawide basis; and (3) improving or devising means in addition to course completion for assessing competence and awarding credit. Additional recommendations are directed toward faculties, institutional administrative officers, accrediting agencies, state agencies, legislators and Federal executive agencies, and to national organizations.
