Academic Computers in Service. Effective Uses for Higher Education.
Mosmann, Charles
This book is designed for noncomputing, specialist administrators who want straight answers to questions about the value and use of computers. The book: (1) summarizes the ways computers are being effectively used in higher education today, in science, social science, and humanities research-instruction, and administration; (2) describes the various kinds of computer systems available--the traditional on-campus computer center, the decentralized minicomputer systems, off-campus commercial services, and large shared-computer complexes and regional networks; (3) shows where instruction about computers fits into the curriculum; (4) explains how to acquire new computing systems or improve the efficiency of present systems; (5) advises on the management of the system and on establishing policy for its use; (6) makes realistic suggestions for paying for the system and its upkeep; and (7) points out that the computer center on any campus must be treated in a business-like way, yet it must also be treated as a laboratory where there is freedom to experiment and invent.
