Breaking the Bonds of Racism.
Lindsey, Paul; Lindsey, Ouida
This book is about perceptions, conceptions and misconceptions which go to shape our beliefs and justify our attitudes. It might be considered a dialogue--or a confrontation. This book is an outgrowth of the interchange of questions and answers. The questions have been asked by several thousand people--elementary and high school students, graduate students in teaching, teachers and other adults in various walks of life. Answers have been supplied by Ouida in numerous assemblies, human relations seminars, discussion groups and school classes. The thousands of questions asked--many of which recurred repeatedly in various audiences and which are still recurring among different groups--suggested to the authors that a book addressing itself directly to the questions would be of value. The first stage in the writing of the book was to go through the lists of questions and to categorize them under subject headings. Part I of the book, "The Lifestyle of Black People," deals with questions raised by people in all walks of life, and with which teachers and many other people are continually confronted. The topics discussed include: The Ghetto: What It's Like and How It Grows, Relations Between Whites and Blacks, Stereotypes, Race, Color, Marriage, and Integration. Part II, "Black and White Perspectives on Education and Learning," deals more specifically with questions raised by teachers and prospective teachers concerned about teaching black students.
