Teach Me, and I Will Be Silent.
Green, Joan L.; Stone, James C.
The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of undergraduate degree programs in nursing on students from the University of Portland (UP) and the University of San Francisco (USF). Data were collected via structured group interviews and a double Q-sort administered twice at the end of each year of the program. The study was designed to answer the following questions: Is the new curriculum at USF achieving its objectives? Does exposure to the new curriculum change students? How do graduates of the new program at USFcompare with graduates of the old program? How do the graduates of USF compare with the graduates of UP? What are the reactions to the new programs at these institutions? Recommendations made on the basis of the study findings include: a) faculty should demonstrate greater recognition and deeper concern for students as individuals, adults, and potential professionals; b) the substance of professional learning experiences should be increased; c) efforts should be made to individualize learning experiences; d) more in-depth professional experiences should be planned for the final year of the programs; e) team teaching should be readjusted or other strategies considered for the program; f) learning experiences in terms of family content should be reassessed; and g) faculty should reconsider their roles as professional nurse models and educators and adjust those roles within the demands of program objectives.
