The nine-week course for sixth graders concentrates on map skills and the cultural and historical geography of Egypt, Mexico, and Latin America. Having completed the course, the learner will be able to list several ways in which 1) power has led to conflict; 2) new inventions lead to changes in ways of living; 3) man influences his environment and is influenced by it; 4) a law of nations could provide for peace throughout the world; 5) many cultures have contributed to our civilization. Teaching techniques used include problem solving, games, reading, creative activities, independent research and individual projects. Individualized instruction is stressed. The student works on learning activities of his choice in specific areas in the classroom called learning stations. Advantages, characteristics, and ways to organize learning stations are discussed. The guide is divided into the following sections: 1) Orientation; 2) History - Egypt; 3) History - Maps and Globe Skills, Graph and Chart Skills; 4) History - Mexico and Latin America. Each section consists of several units. The concept to be taught, rationale, objectives, teaching strategies, class activities, pre-tests, and post-tests are provided for each unit. (RM)
