Statistics on Mental Retardation in Indiana.
Indiana Association for Retarded Citizens, Indianapolis.
Presented are 19 tables of statistical data on prevalence of mental retardation, and services provided the estimated 158,724 mentally retarded (MR) persons in Indiana through 1973 by special education classes, vocational rehabilitation units, local organizations, and state hospitals and training centers. Given in tables 1 through 8 are data on prevalence by county, age group, and degree of retardation. It is noted that prevalence data may vary due to local circumstances such as cultural deprivation and frequency of marriage among relatives. Data provided in tables 9 through 12 give information such as 36 percent an estimated 43,699 of the school aged educable mentally retarded (EMR) were in public school classes in 1972-1973 (remaining EMR students were thought to be in regular classes); and 77 percent of the school aged trainable mentally retarded were in public school classes for trainables. In table 13 data is given to show findings such as approximately 21.4 percent of the caseload of the Indiana Vocational Rehabilitation Services in 1973 involved the mentally retarded. Tables 14 through 16 give data on funding for local state programs by the Mental Retardation Division of the Indiana Mental Health Department, funding for county services derived through permissive taxation legislation, and funding of local services through United Fund. In tables 17 through 19 the numbers of MR individuals in state hospitals and training centers are identified by enrollment, movement such as transfers, and county of residence. (MC)
