Play Scapes: Two Case Studies.

Learning experience are all around us; they are not necessarily confined to the classroom. Well designed playscapes give children the opportunity to learn through discovery, and if the design of the play space is such that a teacher can give almost constant but unobtrusive guidance to the children's activities, out-of-door play space can become an educational laboratory in the broadest sense of the term. Well-designed playscapes provide opportunities for play to be meshed with learning and for teachers to learn about and from their children. Teachers often think of out-of-door play and time spent on the playground as a "recess from learning." Teachers of both preschool and schoolaged children should find suggestions in this bulletin that challenge them to see how they can transform their "recess" playgrounds into play spaces rich in fun and experimental learning.
