The Preparation of Humanities Teachers: A Status Study.
Kelly, Edward Michael
The purposes of this study were to offer a rationale for interdisciplinary education, to provide descriptions of existing programs for the preparation of humanities teachers, and to offer a model teacher preparation program for the preparation of humanities teachers. The study is devoted to a descriptive analysis of nine existing preparation programs for humanities teachers. It concludes with a chapter divided into two-sections: a survey of 148 humanities teachers on the preparation of humanities teachers and a model preparation program. The survey, conducted in the spring of 1972, was designed expressly for the purpose of building a model program for the preparation of prospective humanities teachers. The model program is based in part on the survey findings and on existing programs. Ultimately the success of most interdisciplinary programs may be measured by the degree of cooperation which can be enlisted among the several areas of the academic community needed to staff such a teacher preparation program.
