The document is an outline of a one-year correspondence course in American History for students at the secondary and college levels. The course objective is to provide the students with a picture of America's people during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries through the use of literature. The student is required to read a certain number of books of his choosing and to complete the lessons which pertain to each book. The lessons consist of writing or essay assignments. The course is organized around the following six units: the American West; Rural America; the Immigrants; Industrial and Urban America; Utopian America; and Political Problems. Each unit is prefaced by a general introduction and consists of two or three reading and writing assignments, followed by a bibliography of resource materials.
