A Pilot Mathematics Assessment of Arizona Sixth-Grade Students.
Arizona State Dept. of Education, Phoenix.
Student achievement in mathematics at the sixth-grade level was assessed in this study. A sample of 4,047 students under 160 teachers in 114 schools, 26 school districts, and 10 counties are given a criterion-referenced mathematics test. The McGraw-Hill Prescriptive Mathematics Inventory (PMI-Aqua Level) was selected for use in this pilot program. The objectives tested on this exam are those most common to the major textbooks used throughout the country. In order to determine what subject matter the students have achieved by sixth grade, only those items testing objectives specifically keyed to material covered in the fourth- and fifth-grade state-approved textbooks were included. Of the 136 items in the PMI-Aqua Book, 82 items were judged to be appropriate. Specific objectives and sample corresponding items are included in this document together with the percent of students who answer the item correctly. General results indicate that the students performed best on items testing computation skills; they performed somewhat less well on measurement, properties of common fractions, and place value items; and they knew least about concepts of number theory, non-metric geometry and problem solving.
