New Movements in the Study and Teaching of English.
Bagnall, Nicholas, Ed.
This book deals with the practice of teaching, the effects of teaching on the personalities of pupils, and the effect teaching has on society. The chapters are each written by an expert in a particular field and are grouped into six sections. "Bird's-Eye Views" discusses the ways in which English teaching has changed and is changing on the international scene. "Social Contexts" examines English as a means of countering social deprivation and explores the needs of children from lower and upper class homes. The particular needs of fourteen and fifteen year olds are considered in "Middle Years," and "Techniques" analyzes new methods available to teachers, ranging from linguistics to television. "Poets" includes two chapters on poetry--one by W. H. Auden. "Examinations" considers the problems English instructors face in evaluating students and contains one student's evaluation of English instruction in literature. Notes on the contributors to this volume, including James Britton, George Allen, Roger Applebee, Anthony Burgess, and Frank Whitehead, are appended. (RB)
