This book treats Pestalozzi as a social critic, political reformer, and teacher. In addition to the interpretation of Pestalozzi's thought, this book presents the story of his life, set against the background of European history, and examines his humanitarianism as an educator. The book contains seven sections: "The Youth" sketches Pestalozzi's childhood development; "The Writer" discusses the family as a social unit and the moral obligations of the state; "The Sociologist" examines the importance of work, the nature of property, and the rights of the individual; "The Political Philosopher" contains views on religion, personal experiences, and politics; "The Methodologist" considers principles of national education for the general populace; "The Educationist" reviews Pestalozzi's views on moral and religious education, vocational education, and elementary education; and "The Social Reformer" analyzes Pestalozzi's successes and failures, rifts with his disciples, and his last years. The book concludes with a view of Pestalozzianism in Braitain and the United States and with several previously unpublished manuscripts. (RB)
