This conference was held to help educators (1) obtain a clearer understanding of the major controversy over current grading practices, (2) share ideas on grading, (3) obtain information on grading alternatives, and (4) learn how to bring about changes in grading procedures. Topics discussed include the relationship of the evaluation of student achievement to accountability programs, college admissions and nontraditional grading, competition, cheating, grading and young children, self evaluation, credit-no-credit grading, written teacher evaluation, grading in urban education, contract learning, student and parent perceptions of grading and what they want, open education and grading, and resistance to change in educational organizations.
