This summary report to the families of the subject children involved in the Pre-School Project outlines in a non-technical manner the methods and category systems used to examine the information gathered and to interpret the findings drawn from the data. The two major interests of the Pre-School Project were: (1) the moment-to-moment experience of the pre-school child considered from his own point of view, and (2) how the environment of objects and people enter into his experience. Observational data were collected according to a "naturalistic approach" over two or four three-month periods (12-15 months, 18-21 months, 24-27 months, and 30-33 months). The development of three kinds of ability was evaluated: receptive language development, the capacity of sense dissonance, and the capacity for abstract thought. The final part of the report summarizes, through anecdotal notes, the major findings of the project regarding how children between the ages one to three construct experiences for themselves from the environment. These descriptive accounts and a discussion of their meaning are grouped according to the child's primary modes of experiencing the world, namely: (1) through actions, (2) through language and symbolic representation, (3) through observation and imitation, and (4) through social interaction.
