The purpose of this study was threefold: to emphasize a need for humanities education in the secondary school today; to explore various types of programs in humanities education in respect to method of approach, content, teaching, and achievment; and to propose guidelines which may aid others in undertaking or implementing a humanities program in their schools. Two schools were selected from each of the four familiar approaches to humanities education for special study: schools exemplifying the thematic approach, the chronological approach, the allied arts approach, and the universal issues approach. Results of this study indicated that diversified programs are in limited use and that a need exists wherein humanities education can play a justifiable role. Recommendations intended to serve as guidelines for planning a humanities program suggest the implementation of the following: a team-teaching situation as opposed to a single teacher; the use of audio-visual materials wherever correlation can be made with classroom studies; field trips related to the classroom work; the involvement of students in the planning of the humanities curriculum; humanities offered as an elective; and the formal preparation of humanities teachers.
