The purpose of this case study was to examine the origin and development of the Center for the Humanities at Arizona State University in Tempe. An attempt was made to explicate why and how the interdisciplinary humanities program began at Arizona State University, to describe the expansion of and changes in the program as it evolved into the Center for the Humanities, and to delineate trends which have implications for the future. This case study method entailed a thorough examination of all available records concerning the program. In addition, many of the individuals who had been involved in the program over its seventeen-year history were interviewed. The oral history technique, used in interviews, utilized tape recordings from which transcripts were made. Begun in 1955, the program has expanded to include a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary courses, an undergraduate and graduate degree program, and a full-time faculty in the Center. The implications of this study of its history and present activity are that the Center for the Humanities will continue to expand and develop. (Author/RB)
