Mental health in education is conceptualized from an ecological point of view. In this framework, the school as an institution must not limit its attention to what it has traditionally viewed as its own particular area of subject matter responsibility; rather, it must perceive its responsibility as relating to the whole of human experience. This document is designed to provide tools for teachers--and in particular English teachers--who have been converted to the relevance of mental health concepts to the curriculum. The basic curriculum and annotated bibliography will enhance the learning environment and will give the individual English teacher a basic tool with which to create a structured course appropriate to the indigenous population of his school. This curriculum should provide a situation in which teachers and students can review and reflect upon the value system inherent in the life-style of each person. The activities suggested as parts of possible curricula for the ninth through twelfth grades frequently incorporated small class groupings and students teach/learn skills as a part of the basic foundation of the activities. This procedure emphasizes the importance of the student's role in his own learning processes and allows him additional means of evaluating how much of what is being presented he has learned.
