During the second semester of the 1971-72 school year, a pilot effort was initiated to use Eastern Airlines personnel as volunteer teachers. With the assistance of Eastern Airlines Officials and the Dade County Public Schools Division of Instruction, six community schools in the Northeast, North Central and South Central districts were opened to the Eastern Airlines Volunteer Program. The overall goal of the project was to meet youths' requests for assistance in the areas of academic subjects, vocational pursuits, or special interests and to give youths an opportunity to interact with an adult who is interested enough to give his time and to listen.
