This study was designed to obtain estimates of what opportunities are now available, via organized courses and degree offerings at the undergraduate level, for students to gain a better understanding of certain ethnic and racial groups, and to determine the extent to which students avail themselves of these opportunities. A questionnaire was sent to 519 Higher Education Panel member institutions, a 20% sample of the relevant population of 2,578 institutions in the United States. Usable responses from 86.9% of the sample indicated that approximately 61% of all institutions offered at least one course in one or more of the ethnic studies in the fall 1972 term. Black studies accounted for the greatest proportion of course offerings in ethnic studies. It also generated the greatest numbers of courses and the largest enrollments.
