Presented alphabetically by state are the legal requirements for class sizes and caseloads for special education services as of June 1, 1973. The child's disability is said to be the main determinant of class size with classes for deaf and blind children generally having the lowest maximum enrollment and classes for the educable mentally retarded generally having the highest maximum class size. It is reported that some states allow a larger class size when an aide is employed. Age is given to be another major determinant of class size with a lower maximum class size mandated for younger children. Noted is Washington's regulation that for each partially seeing child integrated into the regular program the class size will be reduced by one to three normally seeing children. Caseloads for speech therapists are reported to average about 60 children, while caseloads for resource teachers of the visually handicapped may only be about 20 children. (DB)
