The Differential Influence of Three Methods of Sentence Expansion Instruction on the Written Compositions of Second Grade Boys and Girls.
Young, Eleanore Ruth Kerr
Compositions written by 66 second grade boys and girls in one control and two experimental groups were analyzed to study the effect of 21 instructional sessions in sentence expansion and to determine which of the instructional methods employed was most beneficial to a particular sex group. Lesson plans for the control group were parallel to two text-workbook treatments of sentence building, while material covered in the two experimental groups dealt with expansion of sentences with words and phrases expressing time, place, and manner; with adjectives preceding nouns; and with subordination of ideas in adverbial clauses. One experimental group used pencils and paper for the independent exercises while the other experimental group used tape recorders. Results indicated that children seem to improve their written composition through instruction in sentence expansion, and that a differentiation of instructional techniques for the sex groups may be profitable since boys performed best using tape recorders, while girls excelled when responding with pencils and paper.
