Improving the Retention Rate of Indentured Apprentices Placed by Apprenticeship Outreach Programs.
Derryck, Dennis A.
The study examines the retention problems of minority apprentices in the construction industry. It examines personal characteristics, factors internal to the job, factors external to job, and their effects upon retention in four cities: Denver, Cleveland, Dallas, and Philadelphia. A brief account of the labor market experiences of inactive apprentices is also included. Customs and tradition within the industry, discrimination because of race, and on the job problems are noted as principal factors affecting minority retention. Federal antidiscrimination laws are discussed and recommendations are made. (NTIS)
