The learning center is a place for using and storing materials that relate to a special interest or curriculum area. It is a place where the students, after consulting with the teacher, may go to work; where ideas, materials, and activities are presented on a variety of levels of difficulty. Teachers, however, must first decide what the role of the learning center will be in their instructional program. Are they going to use the center primarily for remediation, enrichment, motivation, short courses, or as the major instructional strategy? There are many themes a center might have: a theme on the study of flight could include an exploration of bird wings (identification of bones and their functions, statistical tables of length and weight) and the making and testing of paper airplanes; a listening and viewing center could be set up for students to view examples of flight and then discuss what they have seen.
