This report contains data on funds and manpower in research and development and provides a summary picture of the national patterns of research and development funding and manpower allocations attributed to the four sectors of the economy: Federal Government, industry, universities and colleges, and other nonprofit institutions. Highlights indicate: (1) Total R&D spending in the U.S. is estimated to reach $30.1 billion in 1973-3% above the 1972 level of $29.2 billion. (2) Research and development is expected to account for 2.4% of the GNP in 1973. (3) In 1973 the Federal Government will support 53% of the U.S. R&D effort. (4) Almost 40% of R&D spending in the U.S is devoted to research. (5) Nearly three-fifths of the Nation's basic research will be performed by universities and colleges in 1973. (6) An estimated 525,000 R&D scientists and engineers were employed in the United States in 1972-1% fewer than in 1971. (7) If recent trends in R&D costs per worker continue, and R&D spending reaches a level of about $35 billion, approximately 650,000 scientists and engineers will be employed in R&D work by 1980.
