Individualized Chemistry: A Program Designed to Personalize Instruction.
Florida Univ., Gainesville. P. K. Yonge Lab. School.
A report on the development and tryout of an individualized chemistry program is presented in this monograph, based on the 1969 pilot-test results obtained from the P. K. Yonge Laboratory School and the 1970-72 field test findings from public schools in Florida. The purpose of introducing this program is to help teachers in adopting more personalized methods of teaching. Self-direction and self-pacing activities are emphasized to improve chemistry instruction. Discussions are provided in connection with course organization, materials development, teaching procedures, design of measuring instruments, tryout techniques, and revision of the program. The final content consists of 18 guide sheets organized into seven units. Student-teacher interactions are mostly on a one-to-one or small group basis. Recommendations for the implementation of such a program in a school system are made in terms of staff employment, laboratory and lecture room design, and equipment and material requirements. Included are a stylized model for individualizing instruction, a flow chart of unit 1, a student contract form, a student inventory table, and examples of measurement devices. (CC)
