This study investigated the use of word games to teach beginning reading to first grade students. The study was designed with a three fold emphasis in respect to beginning reading students: (1) to develop criteria for word games, (2) to create seven word games according to these criteria (3) to investigate how these games might expand sight vocabulary. Criteria developed for these games indicated that they should be (1) purposeful, (2) attractive in format and design, (3) flexible, (4) appropriate for the age, number, and characteristics of the children, (5) clear and uncomplicated, (6) self-checking and correcting, and (7) designed for samll groups. Statistical results indicated no significant difference between students using the games and those who did not. When the results were analyzed in regard to ten specific words introduced through the medium of the games, however, it was concluded that games can positively motivate students toward vocabulary growth and that games can be useful aids in the elementary classroom.
