Suggestions for various activities, games, and materials for teaching phonics are presented in this handbook for teachers and teachers in training. The chapters and materials covered include: (1) "Why Phonics," which presents the rationale for teaching phonics; (2) "A Suggested Order for Teaching Phonics," which discusses the order of difficulty of phonic generalizations and suggests a possible order for teaching phonics; (3) "First Things First," which looks at language development, visual discrimination, auditory discrimination, and left to right orientation; (4) "Early Phonics," which includes rhyming, initial sounds, and final sounds; (5) "Moving on with Phonics," which addresses vowel sounds, substitutions, blending, consonant blends and digraphs, phonic combinations, vowel digraphs, word families, silent letters, and syllabication; (6) "Other Aids and Materials with a Phonic Bias," which discusses programed reading, the tape recorder as a phonic aid, the Programed Reading Kit, the Word Study Kit, the SRA Reading Laboratory I, the Talking Page, and Patterns of Sound; and (7) "Classroom Organisation," which provides suggestions for beginning reading, organizing reading, reading schemes, assessing reading failure, and reading tests.
