The purpose of this federally-funded interim report is to present the results of a task inventory analysis survey of automotive mechanics completed by project staff within the Instructional Systems Design Program at the Center for Vocational and Technical Education. Intended for use in curriculum development for vocational education programs in automotive mechanics, a task inventory with 329 task statements was constructed after a literature review and revised after interviewing four consultants about the appropriateness of each task. A mail survey of 139 independent garage automotive mechanics in Ohio yielded 72 useable responses and 12 new car dealerships returned 66 inventory packets. A task job description and time analysis was validated. It was found that on-the-job (self-learned) training and company-sponsored training were the most frequent sources of job skills development.
