The handbook is intended to be part of a graduate course entitled "Education of Visually Handicapped Children" which is taught via computer assisted instruction to teachers in rural areas. Course topics include: education of visually handicapped children, clinical and functional identification criteria, collection of educationally relevant information, the process of seeing, common causes of poor vision, construction of instructional objectives, selection of instructional media and materials, arrangement of classroom environmental conditions, design of instructional procedures, and utilization of appropriate techniques for evaluating performance. Stressed throughout the course are the efficient use of auditory, tactile, and residual visual abilities; careful observation of individual differences; and the development of positive self attitudes in visually handicapped children.
