Staying in School: An Evaluation of a Program to Prevent School Dropouts. Final Report.
Berkowitz, Louis, Ed.; And Others
This demonstration project in New York City undertook to help potential dropouts remain in school through the introduction of a program which combined after-school work experience with group and individual counseling. Concomitantly, it sought to develop an effective intervention methodology for replication in other communities. The principal intervention strategy involved maximizing the role of an autonomous, community-based social agency with varied public agency contacts and diverse facilities and programs. Through the integration of several social work approaches, which combined specific methodologies of adjustment, advocacy, and accommodation, pupils were aided in adjusting to the educational environment while at the same time mediation with the school system was established.
