The Social Studies Field Agent Training Program was a two year experiment supported by the Office of Education and the Ford Foundation. The primary goal of the program was to test the feasibility of employing specially trained social studies teachers, who were referred to as social studies field agents, to increase the rate of the diffusion of innovations in social studies. The report includes the rationale for the program, descriptions of the training and follow-up years, results of a third-party evaluation, and recommendations for future programs. Evaluative data supports the conclusions that social studies field agents can be recruited, trained, and can increase the rate of diffusion and adoption of social studies innovations. The personalities of field agents and the degree of local commitment to change appear to be major variables in the success of inside change agents, such as the field agents.
