Local education agencies expended 36.5 billion for current operations for public elementary and secondary education for the 1970-71 fiscal year. This amount represents an increase of 12.7 percent over the 1969-70 fiscal year. Data for this report were furnished by the State education agencies, and were used to establish the "average per pupil expenditure in a State" as required under Public Laws 81-874 and 89-10 for administration of Title I, ESEA. This report has been expanded and includes data on revenues by source and those expenditure data that have been traditionally included in historical series of public school expenditure reports.
