Ethnicity and American Group Life. A Bibliography.
Weed, Perry L., Comp.
This bibliography grew out of a broad scale effort by the American Jewish Committee, especially its National Project on Ethnic America, to focus new attention on the positive aspects of multi-ethnicity in our society, and also to encourage deeper study and programming for solving the problems of polarization, fragmentation, and white ethnic alienation. While this bibliography is selective, it attempts to provide a survey of the literature on American ethnic groups, with a greater emphasis on those groups who had been largely ignored until recently. Material is included on the immigrant experience, political and social development, and contemporary rediscovery and resurgence. The majority of the literature in the last category is popular and journalistic. The contents are organized into eight sections: (1) General: overviews, theoretical discussions of ethnicity and identity, broad descriptive materials; (2) History: immigration, early settlement patterns; (3) Politics: voting studies, community analyses, analysis of political and social issues; (4) Neighborhoods: ethnic enclaves, residential concentration; (5) Religion; (6) Socio-economic and intergroup issues: group conflict, attitudes, sociological analysis, coalition-building, trade union role; (7) Education: ethnic influence on schools, schools impact on ethnic groups, ethnic studies; and, (8) Community studies.
