Local history as source material for environmental education is uniquely portrayed in this resource kit. Utilizing a Winona County Historical Society publication, "The Beaver Story" and accompanied by a teacher's guide, "The Buried Town of Beaver," and other teaching aids, a case study of the area can be developed. Based on the reminiscences of people who were residents of the pioneer community, the story records the hardships and joys of a small, southern Minnesota town, Beaver, silted over and buried because of poor farming methods but leaving behind an intriguing record of its prosperous early years and final demise. The teacher's booklet supplements the story by providing not only insights into the details of daily life, but also conservation lessons. Behavioral objectives for the unit are suggested, together with activities to be conducted both in the field and classroom. Additional aids (photographs, charts, transparencies, data sheets) detail erosion and flooding problems, cemetery studies, and role-playing projects requiring the gathering of historical and social data.
