The basic purpose of the present study was to study the effectiveness of using trained peers to lead small process groups in freshman orientation. A sample of 253 freshman students from East Central State College in Ada, Oklahoma, were used for the experiment. The instrument used to determine whether perceptions of the college campus climate differed after alternate freshman orientation programs was the College and University Environment Scales (CUES). It was found that the experience of participating in a small group led by a trained peer did not change the perceptions of the freshmen in such a way as to be observed on the CUES. Neither of the experimental treatments influenced the cumulative grade point averages during the first semester, and neither influenced the enrollment ratios of the groups for the succeeding semester.
