Suggestions are made concerning actions which local Committees on Employment of the Handicapped can engage in to help bring about public acceptance of handicapped persons and, particularly, to encourage more employment of the handicapped. Focused upon are disabled veterans, disabled disadvantaged, severely physically handicapped, mentally retarded, and previously mentally ill. For each handicapping condition, general facts concerning incidence and capabilities and need for employment are presented, followed by a brief list of actions which can be undertaken by local Committees to promote job opportunities for that segment of the handicapped population. The booklet also suggests actions to eliminate architectural and transportation barriers, and to increase the effectiveness of National Employ the Handicapped Week. Included are a list of awards programs (to recognize either handicapped individuals or employers of the handicapped) available to Governors' and local Committees, and an annotated list of publicity materials (pamphlets, films, exhibits) on rehabilitation and employment of the handicapped.
