These materials will help the educator develop an awareness of nonverbal behavior, which is complimentary to and independent of the verbal realm, to give a complete picture of the classroom. The purpose of the manual is to enable the teacher to identify nonverbal components of behavior, including dimensions other than behavioral of the teacher's role as classroom leader, and to understand the influence of these components on the verbal teacher-pupil interaction and classroom climate. Five chapters: 1) explain the rationale for developing four nonverbal dimensions of the teacher's role; 2) present fifteen symbols that comprise four dimensions of the Nonverbal Interaction Analysis System (NIAS); 3) present the four dimensions of teacher classroom behavior as they relate to each of ten Interaction Analysis categories of verbal behavior; 4) explain the use of the NIAS coding system, methods, procedures, techniques of observation, and procedures for collecting NVIA data; and 5) present techniques for analyzing these data and interpreting relationships between the nonverbal dimensions and the verbal interaction.
