An objective measure of motivation to achieve for preschool children called Gumpgookies is described. It is an objective-projective technique that requires choice between two alternate types of behavior portrayed in pictures and accompanying verbal descriptions. Gumpgookies are amoeba-like creatures who behave in ways intended to show differences in motivation. The history of the development of the test is reviewed and results of extensive testing reported. Factors analyzed were school enjoyment, self evaluation, purposive behavior, self confidence and instrumental activity. Ethnic-cultural differences are examined. A major problem with the development was in regard to response sets which led to the conclusion that these may be more important in other tests than is recognized. The paper concludes with a brief description of initial development of using the Gumpgookie technique to measure other traits in the affective domain such as warranted self-esteem, warranted other esteem, and integrity or responsibility.
