A Study of Current Practices in Technical Vocational Curriculum Development in Community Colleges of the Western States.
Boss, Richard Dale
In order to evaluate the curriculum development practices of community colleges in the Western States and to recommend guidelines for their technical vocational programs, a survey was made of community college administrators and of State directors of vocational education. Questionnaire data from 56 college administrators in 10 Western States and from the State directors in the 10 states were analyzed and compared. A literature review traced the parallel development of community college movements and vocational education, revealing a question as to the responsibility of the college for this type of education. Survey findings showed basic agreement between the two survey groups. Both felt that the community college should be responsible for the development of curriculum, that the evaluative criteria used for successful high school level vocational education was suitable for community colleges, and that advisory committees were helpful in developing curriculums. The survey data also showed that technical vocational students constituted approximately one third of the student bodies and that enrollments and curriculums were increasing, particularly in non-engineering divisions.
