Workjobs: Activity-Centered Learning for Early Childhood Education.
Lorton, Mary Baratta
Based on the idea that through active involvement with the materials the child would draw out the generalizations within the material, a teacher's method of activity-centered learning for early childhood education is presented. The first section of the book deals with the development of language through workjobs, emphasizing perception, matching, classification, and sounds and letters. Ideas for follow-up discussions are given for each workjob, providing an opportunity for each child to verbalize his experiences and to put his thoughts into words. In the second section, the development of mathematics through workjobs is brought about by games and activities dealing with sets, number sequences, combining and separating groups, and relationships. Finally, the why and how of activity-centered learning are examined, with details given on how to begin, preparation, establishing procedures and routine, record keeping, using money in the workjobs, and introducing a new workjob to the class. An index to the skills is also provided. (LH)
