Navy Medical Information Storage and Retrieval System: Navy MEDISTARS. TR-1-71-Part 2, Manual of Indexing Terms; First Edition.
Ramsey-Klee, Diane M.
A computer-based information storage and retrieval system was designed and implemented for processing Navy neuropsychiatric case history reports. The system design objectives were to produce a dynamic and flexible medical information processing tool. The system that was designed has been given the name NAVY MEDical Information STorage and Retrieval System (NAVY MEDISTARS). A dictionary of 519 indexing terms was formulated to index case history reports for computer input. An initial 100-case sample of anonymous case history reports for neurotic patients, supplied by the Navy Medical Neuropsychiatric Research Unit, was indexed, prepared for input, and processed by the NAVY MEDISTARS system. Reliability studies were conducted of indexing procedures and of system responsiveness to searches for which the data retrieved were compared to the known input. Simulation studies were performed of on-line, interactive input and editing procedures. Forty research queries were run against the computer data base of 100 neurotic case history reports. Part One of this technical report describes the NAVY MEDISTARS system, the 100-case data base, and the research studies enumerated above. Part Two presents a manual of indexing terms and procedures for using the NAVY MEDISTARS system. (Part I is available from NTIS as AD 724 306). (Author)
